100% Q: What were the michelin tire plants in operation in 1965?
I am looking for the Michelin tire plants in operation in 1965 and the towns that they were located in. My grandfather worked in them and am trying to locate him and the rest of the family.
A:Michelin did not operate any plnats in the United States between the Great Depression (1929/1930) and 1970. Read the short company history below:
After toying with making rubber balls, Edouard Daubrée and Aristide Barbier formed a partnership in Clermont-Ferrand, France, in 1863 and entered the rubber business in earnest. Both men soon died, but Barbier in-law André Michelin, a successful businessman, took over the company in 1886. André recruited his brother, Edouard, a Parisian artist, to run the company, and in 1889 it was renamed Compagnie Générale des Établissements Michelin.
That year Edouard found that air-filled tires made bicycling more comfortable. But pneumatic tires were experimental and, because they were glued to the rims, required hours to change. In 1891 Edouard made a detachable bicycle tire that took only 15 minutes to change.
The Michelins promoted their tires by persuading cyclists to use them in long-distance races where punctures were likely. They demonstrated the applicability of such tires for cars in an auto race in 1895. In 1898 André commented that a stack of tires would look like a man if it had arms, a notion that led to the creation of Bibendum, the Michelin Man. André launched the Michelin Guide for auto tourists in 1900.
Expansion followed as Michelin opened a London office (1905) and began production in Italy (1906) and the US (in New Jersey in 1908). Innovations included detachable rims and spare tires (1906), tubeless tires (1930), treads (1934), and modern low-profile tires (1937). During the Depression, Michelin closed its US plant and accepted a stake in Citroën, later converted into a minority stake in Peugeot, in lieu of payment for tires.
Michelin patented radial tires in 1946. Expansion was largely confined to Europe in the 1950s but, thanks to radials, increased worldwide in the 1960s. Sears began selling Michelin radials in 1966. Radials took hold during the 1970s, and Michelin returned to manufacturing in the US, opening a plant in South Carolina in 1975.
Expanding aggressively (Michelin opened or bought a plant every nine months from 1960 to 1990), the company went into the red when economic conditions dipped in the early 1980s and in 1990 and 1991. The company's $1.5 billion purchase of Uniroyal Goodrich in 1990 contributed to the latter losses but improved Michelin's position in the US, the world's largest auto market.
In response to the losses, Michelin attacked its bloated infrastructure and reinvented itself along nine product lines (according to tire/vehicle type plus travel, suspension, and primary product manufacturing). It also consolidated facilities and cut about 30,000 jobs. The company continued to focus on R&D, bringing out new high-performance tires such as its "green" tire designed to help cars save fuel.
Michelin bought a majority interest in a Polish tire maker in 1995, and the next year it bought 90% of Taurus, a Hungarian firm that produces most of that country's rubber. Michelin joined German competitor Continental in 1996 to make private-label tires for independent distributors. The next year Michelin introduced a run-flat tire -- capable of traveling 50 miles after a puncture -- for the automotive aftermarket. The company acquired Icollantas, a Colombian tire group with two factories in Bogotá and Cali, in 1998.
After leading the company for more than 40 years, patriarch François Michelin stepped down in 1999, leaving his youngest son, Edouard, in charge. Almost immediately, Edouard announced a restructuring that would cut 7,500 jobs in Europe, including almost 2,000 in France. The company benefited somewhat from Firestone's recall woes in 2000, but Michelin still faced rising material costs and difficult market conditions.
The European Commission fined Michelin nearly $20 million in 2001, claiming the company engaged in anticompetitive behavior by abusing its dominant position in Europe. In 2003 Michelin and TRW Automotive created EnTire Solutions, a joint venture, to develop a tire pressure monitoring system. Michelin announced a licensing agreement in 2004 for Toyo Tire to make, sell, and promote PAX system tires (run-flat tires).

100% Q: Michelin tires is better than yokohama or toyo tires?
Michelin tire is expensive, hence I automatically assum Michelin tire is way better than any other tires.
Is it correct?
A:When it comes to tires you usually do get what you pay for - but not always.
I have driven almost every tire available in the American market, man of them back to back. In my experience Michelin makes a great tire but their tires tend to be a bit overpriced for what you get. They are very proud of their name and make you pay for it. Certainly there are some competitors that offer as much, or even more tire for less money in certain categories. But it depends on which size you need, what your requirements are and what specific tires you are considering to give you a specific recommendation.

100% Q: Michelin tires on my 7 year old Toyota corolla show some dry cracks. How much longer can I drive?
On a recent inspection at a Toyota dealership, they told me that all my tires have cracks on them and its not safe to drive them anymore. They also showed me visible cracks near where the rubber meets the road. Now, I have driven my Corolla for a relatively short distance over the last 4 years. (I had bought it used with 12,000 miles on it and current mileage is 50,000). I am usually careful about my driving habits and wonder how much longer I can drive with those tires on without any major safety hazard. Any insights will be very helpful. Also, are there differences in quality of tires based on their brands? The dealership was trying to sell me Yokohama tires (apparently the best) for $55 each and installation charges extra. Thanks in advance for taking your time to read through the details and answering the question.
A:Aging is a hot issue in the tire industry and there is no concensus on how old a tire should be before you replace it. Some recommend after 6 years, others after 10 while others have no recommendation at all. Shallow cracking in your tires is normal age-related wear and tear and does not effect the performance of the tire. Deep cracking can be a problem. Your tires are the #1 piece of safety equipment on the vehicle. If its bad they should be replaced.
